How to Become a Bond Sales Manager

Career News January 1, 2014

The bond sales manager is responsible for bond sales officer teams. In this position, the manager oversees the work of his team, as well as looks for ways to generate new interest in bonds and the intuition. Aside from the need for experience in the financial sector, bond sales managers should have at least some experience in customer service and sales.

In order to become a bond sales manager, most institutions require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, or a related field. This education should include some accounting, some computer science, and some leadership training, as these three aspects are often most needed in a managerial position. Managers must be able to lead a team effectively, so some school or certification in this area is a big plus. Familiarity with bonds, the terminology of bonds, and their sale can be acquired through relevant classes or on-the-job experience as a bond sales officer or similar position.

Some experience with marketing would put an applicant ahead of others in the pool, as bond sales managers often must design and implement marketing strategies. While a marketing degree may not be as applicable as a finance degree, developing creativity and sales skills will help a potential candidate be prepared for this aspect of the job.

Developing customer service skills will also help you become a bond sales manager, as they must correspond with customers about sales, answer questions, and provide information about bonds. Sales skills with a deep knowledge of bonds will make a manager effective.

Most organization prefer for their candidates to have at least seven years of experience in bond sales before they can become managers. This time will ensure that you as an applicant understand both the world of sales and the needs of a bond sales team. If there are no bond sales positions available, any job relating to bonds can give you the experience you need in order to be prepared for a managerial position. Gaining the degrees, accreditation, and experience in bond-related fields will make you an attractive applicant to organizations looking for a new bond sales manager.
