Overview of Schools Offering Biomedical Engineering Programs
Ph.D. programs in the field are available through the two highest ranked biomedical engineering graduate schools; namely, Georgia Institute of Technology and John Hopkins University. While both are highly rated, Johns Hopkins University enjoys a slightly higher ranking than Georgia Tech. Apart from Johns Hopkins’ Ph.D. program, a Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) is also available at the school. Dual degree programs in medicine and biomedical engineering are available to students enrolled at Georgia Tech. Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland
In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Johns Hopkins University at the top of its list of best biomedical and bioengineering graduate programs. A postdoctoral fellowship program, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering and Master of Science and Master of Engineering are available through the school. The school offers the MS program through its Department of Biomedical Engineering, targeting students keen on careers in medicine, research and development, or academia.
A thesis project and 24 credits are requirements for students enrolled in the MS program. Fundamental engineering principles are learned by students from the conduct of research and completion of specialized courses in areas of biomedical engineering such as biomedical imaging, systems physiology, and biosensors. Concepts in modern engineering, life sciences, mathematics and computer science are in the Ph.D. program. Through postdoctoral fellowships, students are given an opportunity to conduct research alongside experienced faculty members and attend seminars and lectures.
Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta
In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked the Georgia Institute of Technology second on its list of best biomedical and bioengineering graduate programs. A specialization in biomedical engineering is available through the school in collaboration with Emory University. In the program, courses are offered in life sciences, mathematics, and engineering; students learn about solving biomedical issues from a systems perspective, as well as quantitatively.
Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering or life sciences. They must also complete a semester of organic chemistry, a year of calculus-based physics, and a semester of calculus. The department also offers associated degree programs in computational science and engineering, bioengineering, bioinformatics and robotics. A dual Ph.D. through Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and biomedical engineering programs is completed by some students.
