While doctoral programs in cultural anthropology are at both the University of Wisconsin – Madison and Duke University, these are very different in their character. A traditional Ph.D. curriculum is followed by Wisconsin’s Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology where a dissertation is required; a portfolio format is used in Duke’s program. In this article, we take a look at these top Cultural Anthropology graduate schools in the United States that are ranked highly by the U.S. News and World Report:

Duke University in Durham, North Carolina

In 2014, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Duke University in Durham, North Carolina 7th on its list of best National Universities. A doctoral program and a dual Master of Arts (M.A.) and Juris Doctor (J.D.) program are available through the school’s Department of Cultural Anthropology. These programs accommodate law students seeking a master’s degree in cultural anthropology. A portfolio system forms the basis of the doctorate program.
