While doctoral programs in cultural anthropology are at both the University of Wisconsin – Madison and Duke University, these are very different in their character. A traditional Ph.D. curriculum is followed by Wisconsin’s Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology where a dissertation is required; a portfolio format is used in Duke’s program. Duke University in Durham, North Carolina

In 2014, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Duke University in Durham, North Carolina 7th on its list of best National Universities. A doctoral program and a dual Master of Arts (M.A.) and Juris Doctor (J.D.) program are available through the school’s Department of Cultural Anthropology. These programs accommodate law students seeking a master’s degree in cultural anthropology. A portfolio system forms the basis of the doctorate program. Various essays and research items from three areas of concentration are in portfolios, including various cultural topics, geographic locations, and interdisciplinary subjects. An undergraduate degree in anthropology is necessary for incoming students for admission into the doctorate program, but the prior completion of some undergraduate coursework in anthropology or related subjects is an expectation of applicants.

University of Wisconsin – Madison
