Higher Education Articles September 15, 2015

This article talks about the best graduate schools offering electrical engineering programs and information about those schools.

Overview of Schools Offering Electrical Engineering Graduate Programs

In this article, we take a look at some top electrical engineering graduate schools that are ranked highly and offer a range of graduate programs, including those leading to master’s and doctoral degrees for students. These schools also offer multi- and inter-disciplinary programs.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge

In 2009, Times Higher Education ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the top of its list of best engineering and information technology graduate programs. In 2011, the U.S. News and World Report ranked MIT at the top of its list of best Electrical Engineering graduate programs.

Several graduate programs are available through the school’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. These include the Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), Engineer or Electrical Engineer in Computer Science, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering. The department also collaborates with MIT’s Sloan School of Management to offer an interdisciplinary master’s degree program in computation for design and optimization.

California Institute of Technology in Pasadena

In 2010, the U.S. News and World Report ranked California Institute of Technology, or Caltech, fourth on its list of best national universities. In 2011, the school’s Division of Engineering & Applied Science was rated fifth best among national engineering schools. To date, 31 Nobel Prize winners have been produced by this small private research university with its reputation for academics.

Multi-disciplinary study is emphasized by the Electrical Engineering Department, which collaborates strongly with other departments, including the Computer Science Bioengineering and Applied Physics departments. Incoming students can choose between a one-year master’s degree program and a Ph.D. program whose admission criteria require applicants to hold a master’s degree. Various research opportunities are available through the department in lasers, wireless systems, quantum electronics, and bioelectronics.
