Areas of concentration, such as seniors and mental health, and children and families, are usually offered in master’s degree programs in social work. The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and Columbia University are two top schools that offer master’s degrees in social work. The social work programs at both schools are nationally ranked and offer practice concentration areas and methods.

University of Michigan – Ann Arbor

In 2014, the U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor fourth best on its list of best public universities in the United States. In 2012, the university also topped the publication’s list of top graduate social work programs. A specific practice method and area of concentration are available to students enrolled in the Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) program. A required internship is completed by students; this can take place in public schools, correctional facilities, advocacy groups, and psychiatric centers.

Columbia University in New York, NY

In 2014, the U.S. News and World Report ranked Columbia University fourth best on its list of best national universities in the United States. In 2012, Columbia was also ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as the fifth best social work graduate school in the United States. A Master of Science (M.S.) in Social Work is offered at Columbia that full-time students can complete within two years and part-time students within four years. A primary method of practice and area of practice are selected by students. Practice areas include youth and family, disabilities and mental health, aging, and refugee and immigrant services. Over the duration of the program, 600-1200 hours of fieldwork have to be completed by students at social agencies and organizations.
