Some of USA’s most selective graduate schools are the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. Admission criteria for these programs typically require incoming students to meet a high GPA standard and submit high scores on entrance exams. In this article, we take a look at these universities:

University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia

In 2011, the U.S. News and World Report named the University of Pennsylvania as the fifth best among national universities in the United States. There are eight graduate schools in the university offering programs in medicine, law, business, engineering, design, and education.

These graduate schools that are highly rated are very selective and competitive. For instance, the Wharton School accepted only 16.9% of applicants for admission to the school in 2009. The Wharton School was rated as the best Executive MBA program in the United States, on its 2010 list by the U.S. News and World Report. On average, incoming students to Wharton boast a GPA of 3.50 and a GMAT score of 718.

In 2009, the School of Medicine registered a 4.8% acceptance rate; on average, applicants to the school had a GPA of 3.81 and an MCAT score of 11.9.

Columbia University in New York, New York

In 2011, the U.S. News and World Report named Columbia University as the fourth best among national universities in the United States. There are 13 graduate schools in the university offering advanced study programs in law, architecture, business, medicine, and the arts.

Columbia’s medical school accepted only 4.3% of applicants for admission to the school in 2009; on average, applicants to the school had a GPA of 3.80 and an MCAT score of 11.9.

The business school boasted an acceptance rate of 14.9% in 2009; on average, incoming students to the school boasted a GPA of 3.50 and a GMAT score of 713.
