Overview of Schools Offering Information Technology (IT) Programs

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Syracuse University are among the best schools that offer information technology graduate programs. The U.S. News & World Report ranks both New York state schools highly among national universities. Interdisciplinary graduate information technology (IT) programs are available through these schools. Only master’s degrees in the subject are at RPI. Both master’s and doctoral programs are available through Syracuse.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY

The U.S. News & World Report ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 41st on its 2011 list of best national universities. In 2008, Computerworld magazine considered RPI one of the best ten innovative information technology schools. The university has interdisciplinary programs in Web science and IT, including a Master of Science (M.S.) in Information Technology where core courses are in software design, database systems, and technology management. A team capstone project is available to students enrolled in this program. While a Ph.D. for IT is not at RPI, doctoral students in engineering, architecture, and management who want to further their studies could choose to focus on research in information technology.

Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY

The U.S. News & World Report ranked Syracuse University 55th on its 2011 list of best national universities. Master’s and doctoral degrees in information science and technology, as well as information management, can find completion through Syracuse’s School of Information Studies for graduate students interested in IT.

Programs in information management for executives, information management, or telecommunications and network management can be completed by master’s students. The university offers some doctoral programs. One of these programs include the part-time Doctorate of Professional Studies (D.P.S.) in Information Management, devised to help experienced IT professionals in advancing in their careers. Another program is the Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology, aimed at preparing students for careers in teaching, consulting and research.
