Schools Offering Risk Management MBA Programs

Various factors can engender risks, such as liability in legal matters, shaky financial markets, and injury from accidents, attacks or natural causes, among others. Students enrolled in a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program with a concentration in risk management are trained in the identification and minimization of potential risks involving private and public sector organizations.

MBA specializations in risk management, offered at both the University of Texas in Austin and University of Pennsylvania, involve two years of study. The U.S. News & World Report has recognized both universities for their graduate programs in business.

In this article, we take a look at some of the best schools in the United States with Risk Management MBA Programs:

University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA

The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School offers 12 graduate business concentrations of which 11 feature among the best ten of their category, as described in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 review. The review accords the university first place in its rankings of Executive MBA programs and finance.

All MBA programs at Wharton, including risk management and insurance, adhere to coursework that comprises the same core and pre-term classes. Students categorize themselves into different MBA departments in accordance with their chosen degree plan. A minimum of five credit units from a list of 13 courses have to be completed by students enrolled in the Insurance and Risk Management MBA programs, including at least three courses focused in insurance and risk management. An advanced study project in the subject must be the fifth and final credit.

University of Texas at Austin

The U.S. News & World Report accorded the 15th rank to the University of Texas at Austin on its list of top finance programs in 2010. The university’s McCombs School of Business accepts incoming students to its MBA program without mandating the declaration of a major. However, it offers concentrations such as risk management through the Department of Information, Risk and Operations Management.

Four academic semesters of study have to be completed by full-time MBA students, including those specializing in risk management. Several classes are available as options, including finance, risk management, operations management or marketing, whereby students may reach 15 total credit hours and complete the concentration.
