Associate of Arts (AA) Programs in PC and Networking Technology

It might be difficult for students to find Associate of Specialized Technology (AST) in PC and Networking Technology degree programs offered outside of for-profit schools. However, those students who are interested in earning an associate degree in the subject can often find Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) programs in networking technology available from community colleges. Such programs can help them develop skills specific to solving computer-related problems in an office environment.

Coursework in this two-year program is devised to teach students about computer programming in a variety of languages, in addition to computer and network maintenance and database management. Apart from being imparted with the knowledge about Internet application and security, they learn to install, operate and troubleshoot computer hardware and software. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework combines classroom lectures and hands-on instruction imparted through computer lab-work. Some schools offer a choice of day and evening courses. Students get trained as they take apart and rebuild computers, install software, build websites and create networks. They also receive hands-on training through participation in internship opportunities and co-op education. Coursework includes topic areas such as:

•Server installation and configuration
•Website design
•Database applications
•LAN/WAN design and maintenance
•A+ software and hardware
•Networking technology
•Internetworking applications
•Systems analysis and design

Career Choices

Graduates can seek entry-level jobs in the various industries that use computers and network technology. Graduates can choose from a range of career titles including:

•Networking specialist
•Web designer
•PC software specialist
•Computer repair technician
•Computer support specialist

Certification and Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of an associate degree program in PC and network technology can either join the workforce immediately upon completion of the program or opt for continued education. Although recruiters prefer to hire bachelor’s degree holders, those whom complete associate degree programs and gain work experience may seek entry-level jobs as computer systems and network administrators. They can expect career advancement after they acquire additional training and work experience, and augment it all with professional certifications obtained through computer product vendors and certifying organizations. Students can use courses in some training programs as a form of preparation for specific certifications.
