Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in history are provided with a comprehensive world-view of the recorded past, in addition to the way it affects the present and future of human civilization.

Information on History Degree Programs

Schools usually offer a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History degree, whose core coursework may have geographical region-wise organization, such as relating to Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Africa, the U.S., or Canada. Coursework may also be organized by time periods; for example, before and after 1800.

Another type of organization may be according to numerous areas of learning, including progression of knowledge, skills acquisition, and breadth. The core coursework provides a broad, global-based foundation, which builds historical perspective and understanding and is aimed at providing assistance to students when they begin to study their area of concentration.

Ancient Rome

Students fulfill the ancient history requirement of history majors through this course, whereby they gain an overview of the economic, military, and political climate of ancient Rome. Students discuss Roman law and its influence through the ages. The functions of famous Romans such as Nero, Cicero, and Julius Caesar are also looked at, in addition to non-Romans, such as Hannibal and Cleopatra, who played pivotal roles in the history of Rome.

Colonialism, Nationalism, and Independence in Latin America

The shaping of the course of history in Latin American countries through colonialism and independence movements is the focus of exploration of this class. Students learn about leaders like Chavez, Pinochet, Peron, Castro, and Batista, in addition to topic areas related to post-colonial challenges and the indigenous peoples of Latin America. Cultural, class, economic, social, and gender debates are explored, in addition to military engagements and international diplomacy.

History of Modern China

Students are given an introduction to the culture and history of 20th-century China. The decline of imperialism resulting from the establishment of the Republic of China is an area of focus. Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution are explored in the lessons, in addition to China’s relationships with various countries, including its neighbors.

Post-1877 American History

Within this class, general American history beginning from the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era and continuing up to the modern period is examined by students. Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society and Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal feature within the topic area of the presidents and their initiatives. Also covered are military conflicts, the Women’s Liberation Movement, the Civil Rights Movement, communism and the Cold War, and landmark economic, cultural, and social developments.

20th Century Russian History

The European history requirement of history majors is typically fulfilled by this class. Lectures cover the Cold War, World War II, World War I, the Russian Revolution of 1917, and tsarist Russia. Gorbachev, Khrushchev, Stalin, Lenin, and the Romanov tsars, among other major Russian leaders, are also discussed. Also included in the discussions are international relations, economics, communism, and socialism.
