The practical skills and theoretical knowledge used in the communications and media businesses will be provided in an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in Communication Arts. Students will be prepared for further study in a related area or entry-level employment.

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree Programs in Communication Arts

Students enrolled in associate’s degree programs are generally imparted a combination of technical training and experience of interpersonal, visual, written and verbal communication skills. Students can expect to acquire practical and theoretical knowledge while being imparted a broad understanding of techniques and methods of communication employed by the broadcast production, media and advertising industries. They will also become adept in the skills necessary to operating industry-standard equipment and software programs.

It usually takes two years for students to complete associate’s degree programs. Those who successfully complete the program can pursue entry-level occupations in the media, broadcasting, advertising or journalism industries. Alternatively, they may seek continued education in communications or a related field.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework within Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree programs usually cover communication theory and techniques, while students enrolled in Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree programs can expect to become adept in the production-oriented skills necessary to producing a variety of types of multimedia and digital art.

Those who successfully complete bachelor’s degree programs in Communication Arts may seek continued education by earning a master’s degree in Communication Arts; this usually requires students to specialize in an area of choice, such as media or film.
