Majors Overview March 30, 2014

Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia associate degree programs feature multi-disciplinary, technical coursework in order to give professional training in design and production to students. Students will be prepared for careers in several fields, including design, media, creative, and commercial art.

A.A.S. Programs in Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia

Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia AAS programs are devised to help students become adept at creating, editing, manipulating and presenting graphic and visual communications by employing various media. Foundational design concepts relating to scale, lighting, color, layout and composition, are taught in these programs. Students are expected to demonstrate the application of these ideas in web media, graphic design projects, illustrations, and video and film projects. Using software and hardware, students will become adept in practical technical skills in editing, design and animation.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

There is an emphasis laid in AAS programs in Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia on employing technology such as software suites, and computer programs, among other technology in the creation of art. Core coursework typically includes rudimentary classes in visual communications, in addition to beginning, intermediate and advanced classes in topic areas such as:

•Computer animation and graphics
•Graphic design
•Web design and programming
•Illustration
•Editing technologies
•Video production
•Digital photography

Career Choices

Earning a Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia degree will enable students to seek entry-level careers in various media industries, and work for film and video production companies, interactive media companies, digital design firms, advertising and marketing agencies, and broadcast media outlets. They may also seek careers as independent contractors, freelancers, or choose from job titles such as:

•Digital video editor
•Multimedia animator
•Videographer
•Graphic designer

Continuing Education Choices

Those who successfully complete Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia programs enjoy a wide array of educational options that could depend on an individual’s career goals and the recruiter’s requirements. An associate degree may be enough for individuals who seek entry-level careers as animators, multimedia artists, film and video editors, camera operators, and graphic designers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). These professionals can seek work in firms that offer assistant or trainee positions. Other jobs may prefer candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in a related field; prospective recruiters in these firms might aim at earning a 4-year degree in Multimedia Design, Film or Video Production, or Graphic Design, among other similar fields.
