A.A.S. Programs in Telecommunications Technology
Students enrolled in an Associate of Applied Science degree program in telecommunications technology are taught how to work with systems used in commercial and residential environments. Students can expect to become adept at keeping systems functioning properly, while being able to install and repair them. Coursework includes digital and analog concepts. Graduates of the program can pursue entry-level jobs that involve working on all types of telecommunications systems, including data, video and voice.
Admission criteria generally require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. Some schools may expect high school students to have completed a number of years of classes in vocational studies, science and math.
Coursework related to the majority of programs focuses heavily on telecommunication courses augmented by some general education classes. Coursework is mainly technical in orientation and includes hands-on instruction devised to impart the concepts being taught. An internship is included in some programs whereby students can gain real-world experience in the industry. Individuals can choose to pursue continued education through bachelor’s and master’s programs in telecommunications, in various areas of study including communications with a major focus in telecommunications engineering or telecommunications. Individuals may also enroll in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in computer systems or other related area.
