A.A. Programs in Architectural Building Engineering Technology
Students enrolled in Associate’s degree programs in architectural building engineering technology are generally offered coursework with a focus on building design and the basic components they would find relevant when they create and maintain structures. Coursework that combines practical and theoretical instruction provides students with an understanding of technology, construction, engineering, building systems and design. Classes in science and math are augmented with courses in critical thinking, communication, observation, technical writing, and architectural drafting.
Students enrolled in a majority of programs are required to gain knowledge about code and public safety requirements for buildings. Program coursework is devised to give students a degree of familiarity with aspects of energy-conscious design, electronic media, environmental systems, structures and planning, even as they develop a historical appreciation of buildings and learn how to become professionally accountable for their designs. Students enrolled in some programs are offered the opportunity to participate in internship programs.
Educational Requirements
In many programs, admission criteria require the submission of high school transcripts by applicants who are also required to have basic knowledge of science and math.
Coursework
Coursework over the duration of architectural building engineering technology programs typically gives students the opportunity to hone skills related to design, materials, construction techniques, construction documents, graphic communications and drafting. Students may also be taught aspects of:
•Information modeling
•Technical communication
•Building codes
•Construction management
•Architectural sketching
•Environmental systems
•Surveying
•Computer-aided design
•Technical drafting
•Construction estimating
Career Choices
Graduates of an associate’s degree program in architectural building engineering technology can seek entry-level jobs in technical and design support roles in the construction field, in work settings that include engineering and architectural firms or with surveyors and contractors. They can choose from positions such as:
•Construction supervisors
•Architectural job captains
•Senior drafting personnel
•Architectural engineering technicians
•Building inspectors
Continuing Education Choices
Graduates may choose to pursue continued education by earning a bachelor’s degree in the industry. Students enrolled in Bachelor’s degree programs in architectural engineering technology are prepared for additional career opportunities, such as, designers of mechanical, structural or electrical elements, construction project managers, and facilities managers, in building construction projects.
