Degree Overview: Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree in Multimedia and Web Design

Multimedia and web design features the use of computer graphics, digital programs, and 3-D animation to create interactive products or design websites. Students will be prepared for entry-level work with an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree program in multimedia and web design.

A.A. Programs in Multimedia and Web Design

Students enrolled in Associate’s Degree Programs in Multimedia and Web Design can expect to become adept at the artistic and technical skills they would need to accomplish a competency in the advertising or entertainment fields. Students are taught ways of manipulating digital images or 3-D models for customers with an interest in animation, including the use of programs like Photoshop and Flash. Students with an interest in Web design would benefit from completing courses in typography, scripting and programming languages. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Students are helped with developing portfolios that feature their best work in animation, art, web design and typography. Schools offer courses related to multimedia technology and web design in topic areas such as:

Career Choices

Once they successfully complete the program, students may seek entry-level jobs in the industry, though hirers for some positions such as multimedia or graphic artist prefer holders of bachelor’s or higher degrees. Potential employment may revolve around developing online interfaces and websites for organizations. Graduates may choose from various job titles such as:

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of an associate’s degree program may seek continued education by earning a bachelor’s degree in the field and even go beyond to earn a master’s degree. Schools may offer bachelor’s degree programs in art-related fields such as graphic design, media arts, multimedia and web design. Technical classes in typography, image manipulation, programming and animation, may be included in bachelor’s degree programs. Recruiters for various advanced positions in multimedia arts may insist on candidates who have completed a four-year degree program.

The focus of master’s degree programs can be on assisting students with developing their technical or artistic skills in multimedia arts or web design. Students who graduate from these programs may also pursue teaching jobs. Courses in engineering and computer science may also be included in some programs.
