Degree Overview: Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree in Behavioral Science

Majors Overview March 12, 2014

Behavioral science refers to the study that features examining animal and human behavior, as well as aspects of psychology, anthropology, and other sciences. Associate of Science (A.S.) degree programs will prepare graduates for undergraduate degree programs in fields that are related and entry-level jobs in the behavioral or social science field.

A.S. Programs in Behavioral Science

Students enrolled in the associate’s degree program in behavioral science are provided with a rudimentary background in human behavior and human sciences. Many schools offering the program allow enrolled students to transfer their credits into 4-year baccalaureate programs in various fields such as psychology or behavioral science.

Incoming students to this 2-year behavioral science degree program are introduced to the principles and theories of human development, human sociology and human psychology during the course. They become adept at performing basic research in the field of behavioral science, using critical thinking skills on independent assignments, as well as writing up their research findings clearly and concisely.

Education Requirements

Community colleges typically offer the A.S. in behavioral science whose admission criteria require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. Some behavioral science programs admit only those students who plan to transfer to a 4-year degree program after they graduate.

Coursework

Coursework pertinent to an associate’s degree program in behavioral science imparts rudimentary knowledge to students about the human science field, in addition to a liberal education background. Coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Critical thinking skills
•Scientific thought
•Human development

•Human biology
•Group dynamics
•Behavioral science research

Graduates of an associate’s degree program may opt for entry-level careers such as:

•Mental health technician
•Social work aide
•Case management assistant

Continuing Education Choices

Those who successfully complete an associate’s degree program in behavioral science can choose from several educational opportunities, such as majoring in anthropology, sociology, human behavior or psychology. Prospective social workers, counselors and psychologists may also seek to earn master’s degrees in these fields. They may also choose from different available bachelor’s degree programs in behavioral science whose coursework is an expansion on the research methods and principles of the field.
