Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree Programs in Humanity Studies

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Humanity Studies program have to complete multidisciplinary coursework that includes music, philosophy, English, history, art, and religion. Students study about the relationship of this curriculum to people, in addition to the manner of evolution of these disciplines. Four-year universities and colleges usually offer these flexible programs in the humanities field, sometimes in an online format.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

General education courses have to be completed by the majority of students during the initial two years of the program before they move on to core coursework relating to specific concentrations. There is great variation in the coursework related to humanity studies programs.

Enrolled students gain skills in writing and speaking through the courses. Some programs may include a humanities internship whereby students can gain practical experience in real-world settings, in addition to course credit. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Philosophy
•Theology
•Interdisciplinary arts
•Literature
•Business writing

Career Choices

Once they graduate, students can seek entry-level jobs at the administrative level with some larger organizations. They may seek employment in areas such as social service, law, government, corporate communications, marketing and sales, advertising, and education. Graduates can choose from various options within these fields, including:

•Sales management
•Account executive
•Lobbyist
•Copy editor
•Social work assistant
•Volunteer coordinator

Job and Wage Outlook

In May 2012, social and human services assistants brought home an average annual wage of $28,850. During the same period, sales managers earned $105,260 on average per annum (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, an average job growth rate of 8% has been predicted for sales managers. During the same decade, social work assistants are expected to see a 22% job growth (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Those that graduate from the bachelor’s degree program can seek advanced degrees in the liberal arts field of choice or in humanities. Students typically take two years to complete a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Humanities, which may culminate with a thesis.

Similar to some undergraduate programs in humanities, several master’s degree programs in humanities avail students a choice of concentrations in specific liberal arts areas. A student may choose coursework in a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Humanities program in accordance with the said student’s concentration area. A dissertation based on their curriculum is written and defended by students enrolled in the program.
