Majors Overview January 26, 2015

Child care management involves directing, coordinating, and planning activities for child care centers and preschools. Human service agency and child care center careers will be available for those that graduate from these programs.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Program in Child Care Management

Students enrolled in four-year bachelor’s degree programs in child care management are provided with the opportunity to gain a firm grasp of constructing and maintaining safe learning environments for children.

Individuals delve into ways of planning and directing instructional activities. Students can expect to gain expertise in using the relevant techniques to monitor progress, set standards, resolve problems, and work with staff or parents.

Many programs provide numerous experiences, thereby honing students’ skills relating to time management, leadership, conflict resolution, problem solving, decision making, active learning, critical thinking, communication, and listening. Schools often encourage participation by enrolling students in child care fieldwork experiences or practicums.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to bachelor’s degree programs in child care management to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

•Meal management

•Nutrition and well-being
•Child development
•Family resource management

Career Choices

Graduates can expect to gain the management skills that would make them adept at planning and directing student activities, hiring staff, and conferring with parents. They can seek entry-level careers in child care programs, child care centers, and preschools and pursue job positions such as:

•Early Head Start directors
•Site coordinators
•Child care center directors
•Preschool directors

Job and Wage Outlook

In 2012, preschool and childcare center/program education administrators brought home an average annual wage of $43,950 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). A projected faster-than-average job growth rate of 17% has been predicted for these professionals over the 2012 – 2022 decade (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Those that complete a bachelor’s degree program in childcare management can either choose to join the workforce immediately or opt for continuing education by earning a master’s degree in early childhood education that focuses on the principles of youth, including educational needs, learning environments, and developmental milestones.
Coursework in a master’s degree program is devised to facilitate the choice of concentrations in an individual area, such as culture, gender, family, or community. Those that complete a master’s degree can expect to become adept at developing diversity, creating supportive learning environments, and producing programs aimed at enhancing child learning.
