Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Computer Engineering Technology

Majors Overview November 9, 2014

Graduates of bachelor’s degree programs in computer engineering technology will be provided with advanced skills in network systems, computer hardware, and software. They may find employment in a variety of industries, such as finance, automobile manufacturing, and information technology.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Computer Engineering Technology

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in computer engineering technology are taught about the use of network principles, mathematics, and computing technology with the aim of creating new computer procedures and products. Practical skills are gained by students as they learn to operate circuit design software, conduct interface experiments, and create prototype circuits.

Particular emphasis is placed on the intangible aspects of training, such as character and leadership development, teamwork, and communication. Classroom instruction and training are augmented by work-study experiences and field experience with professional engineering organizations. Extensive design projects are required to be completed by students towards the end of the program before they graduate.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. Completion of a series of high school classes in chemistry, computer technology, statistics, and calculus, among other analytically rigorous subject areas, would also benefit students enrolled in the program.

Coursework

Coursework is a rich blend of advanced mathematics and science courses, such as differential equations, probability, and physics, and covers topic areas of computing technology, such as:

•Microprocessor design
•Sensor applications
•Programming
•Circuits
•Embedded systems

Career Choices

Enrolled students are taught about systems design, microcomputers, and digital circuits, which qualifies them to seek employment in various industries, such as software or interface design. They can opt for popular positions such as:

•Automation engineer
•Network support specialist
•Software technologist

Job and Wage Outlook

A 30% job growth rate has been predicted for software developers over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics); the increase is expected to be driven by growing demands for software. Over the same period, computer support specialists are expected to witness an 18% increase in job growth, while mechanical engineers are expected to see a growth rate of 9%.

In 2012, software developers earned an average annual wage of $93,350, while mechanical engineers banked $80,580, and computer network support specialists brought home $48,900 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

The Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals offers professional certification aimed at benefiting computer engineering graduates. They can obtain certification through the passage of certifying exams involving tests in numerous areas, such as information systems. Continuing education is required to ensure re-certification. Students may also opt for continuing education by earning a master’s degree program in computer engineering.
