Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Computer Systems Security

Majors Overview February 12, 2015

Computer systems security specialists implement, maintain, and develop information security systems for companies and businesses. Students in Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs in Computer Systems Security will be prepared with the business acumen and computer science foundation needed to provide efficient security solutions for companies that need data protection.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Computer Systems Security

Students enrolled in a computer systems security program are taught to work with companies in order to ensure the security of their resources and data. To this end, they learn to put protective software in place in order to survey systems for security breaches and proactively try to prevent cyber attacks and pull together data pertinent to investigations related to cyber crime.

A basic overview of computer science and business principles marks the beginning of the program, aimed at developing an understanding of the operational methods and needs of the majority of companies. Students are imparted the technical expertise they would need for the creation and monitoring of systems in the safest possible way.

The program teaches students about safety risks and techniques to enable their detection, in addition to current laws and regulations. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma; prospective students would also benefit by completing high school level advanced math and computer classes.

Coursework

Coursework is devised to impart hands-on experience in the planning and usage of security systems via internships and practical course assignments. Coursework in computer systems security programs may include:

•Cyber threat detection
•Network security
•Computer forensics
•Cyber security fundamentals
•Criminal law
•Managing digital data

Career Choices

These professionals enjoy many career opportunities thanks to the prominence gained by information technology industries and the consequent increase in the demand for effective security measures and personnel to ensure secure transmission of information. Graduates from the bachelor’s degree program can expect to have the computer security and networking knowledge needed for positions such as:

•Computer security specialist
•Information technology security analyst
•Information security analyst
•Data protection administrator
•Information systems security analyst

Job and Wage Outlook

In December 2013, data security administrators and computer security analysts took home average annual wages of $47,440 and $65,030, respectively. In 2012, information security analysts earned an average annual wage of $86,170 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

A job growth rate of 37% has been predicted for the information security field over the 2012 – 2022 decade; the expansion is expected to be mainly driven by the increasing frequency of online security breaches and hacker threats.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates from the bachelor’s degree program can seek continuing education in the field by earning graduate degrees in computer security, whereby they can enhance their knowledge of systems security. Apart from seminars and courses, coursework involves independent research focused on finding creative solutions to large-scale systems security challenges or particular safety issues.
