Majors Overview February 10, 2015

Receive information about the bachelor’s degree program in creative writing and its education requirements, coursework, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Creative Writing

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in creative writing are introduced to a broad range of creative writing techniques and literary genres. Creative writing students are taught the importance of revision in the writing process. Coursework places emphasis on peer critiquing and reading and helps build students’ critical thinking skills.

Education Requirements

There are both non-selective and selective undergraduate programs. Students enrolled in creative writing bachelor’s degree programs that are more selective may be required to complete entry-level creative writing workshops before they are admitted to the program. Submission of a personal essay, in addition to one or more creative writing samples is also required of applicants.

Coursework

Often, there are fewer than 20 students in creative writing courses, which consequently resemble intimate workshops. Work-in-progress is read to the class during these creative writing labs, and helpful suggestions are sought from the audience. Coursework within a creative writing bachelor’s degree program may include the following courses:

•Fiction writing
•Poetry writing
•Screenwriting
•Playwriting
•Narrative technique
•Literature throughout history
•Literary theory
•Non-fiction writing

Job and Wage Outlook

A slower-than-average job growth rate of three percent has been predicted for authors and writers over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, writers banked an average annual wage of $55,940.

Continuing Education Choices

Those that successfully complete a four-year creative writing program may seek continuing education by earning a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Creative Writing, whereby they may seek jobs teaching writing at the college level. Doctoral degrees in creative writing may be pursued by individuals that wish to advance their education further; they can thus refine both their teaching and writing skills. Many universities and colleges offer creative writing continuing education workshops.
