Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Digital Media Production

Majors Overview May 21, 2014

Bachelor’s degree programs in digital media production may focus on interactive media, scriptwriting, graphics, film production, audio production, editing, design, and video production. Those who graduate from these programs are usually qualified for entry-level jobs in sports media, television, or film immediately.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Digital Media Production

Students enrolled in a digital media production bachelor’s degree program are offered the opportunity of exploring video work in news, sports, television, and film. Students are taught about editing techniques, computer-assisted creation, and camera operation.

Participation in internships is expected of students enrolled in some schools; this is aimed at imparting real-world experience that could lead to airtime. Before the program culminates, students at some schools are required to compile a portfolio they can use to demonstrate their skills and knowledge before employers.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

About 120 semester credits, spread over four years, are required to be completed by students enrolled in the program. Coursework also includes general education classes in liberal arts, such as political science, history, psychology, sociology, math, and English. Coursework also requires students to perform hands-on work with interactive editing software and gain experience with film development. The use of digital audio recorders and professional camcorders is also covered in the curriculum, which may include topic areas such as:

•Scriptwriting for television
•Fieldwork production
•Audio editing
•Electronic fieldwork
•Video production
•Legal issues in media
•Society and media

Career Choices

Graduates of the program can seek work with independent film studios, cable corporations, or broadcasting companies, in job titles such as:

•Multimedia editor
•Television director
•Production assistant
•Audio editor
•Reporter

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 3% has been predicted for film and video editors, including camera operators, over the 2012-2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). Over the same time, producers and directors are expected to enjoy a 3% job growth rate. In 2012, film and video editors banked an average annual wage of $46,280. During that time, producers and directors took home $71,350.

Continuing Education Choices

Bachelor’s degree graduates can opt for continued education by earning master’s degrees in film and media productions or media studies. Individuals who aspire to become writers or use digital media production media to perform creative work can earn a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Screenwriting, Film and Arts Production, or Digital Arts Production.
