Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Human Services Management

Human services management programs, which are four-year programs, feature a combination of management skills required for directing social or human service agency activities with social science disciplines. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program, students may find careers with private, nonprofit, or public social agencies.

Bachelor of Science (B.S. ) Degree Program in Human Services Management

Numerous social science disciplines, including foundational coursework in human development, sociology, social work, and psychology, are used to devise coursework in human services management bachelor’s degree programs.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. Coursework requires the examination of topic areas such as sociological research and substance abuse treatment.
The administrative and business skills needed for managing or leading a human services agency will be taught to students through curricula in leadership, community management, financial management, and statistics. Students are usually required to complete a practicum or internship, whereby they can gain practical experience in the real world work environment.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of programs in human services management, coursework is devised to impart instruction with numerous aspects that will help individuals understand human behavior and fulfill psychological needs. Those that graduate from human services management degree programs can pursue entry-level or management positions in various human and social services organizations, healthcare facilities, halfway houses, childcare facilities, group homes, and government assistance agencies (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). These professionals can seek numerous occupations in the field:

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 21% has been predicted for social and community service managers over the 2012 – 2022 decade (BLS). In 2012, these professionals brought home an average annual salary of $59,970 (BLS). Florida, New York, the District of Columbia, and Rhode Island are among the states that paid the highest wages to these professionals at that time, with an average annual salary ranging between $74,000 and $81,000.

Continuing Education Choices

Those that successfully complete a bachelor’s degree program may seek continuing education by earning a master’s degree in the field, wherein they can opt for specializations in diverse areas of human services administration aimed at providing advocacy or counseling services oriented toward a particular group or population. Alternatively, they may choose to enter the workforce immediately upon completion of the program.
