Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Information Systems

Students will understand how to manage information databases and networks when they participate in a bachelor’s degree program in Information Systems. Graduates of this programs will use their knowledge of technology and computer related skills to maintain and design information systems for businesses, institutions, and companies.

B.S. Programs in Information Systems

Schools typically offer bachelor’s degree programs in Information Systems as a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems, not as a Bachelor of Information Systems. Students enrolled in Information Systems programs can expect to become adept at implementing, organizing and managing complex systems of data and information resources. They are taught to resolve a wide array of business-related problems and inquiries, in addition to identifying ethical and legal issues in information systems organizations.

A multi-dimensional approach is adopted in programs devised to train students in network design, software engineering, database development and programming. Schools offer information systems programs in both hybrid and online formats.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework balances specialized courses in database management, information systems and generalized classes related to the wide area of computer systems and technology. In 2012, computer systems analysts earned an annual average wage of $79,680; corresponding average incomes during the period for information systems managers, programmers, and information security analysts were $120,950, $74,280, and $86,170, respectively; (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). While the job growth rate of 25% has been predicted for systems analysts over the 2012-2022 decade, a 15% employment increase has been projected for information systems, 8% for computer programmers, and 37% for information security analysts (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of a bachelor’s degree program in Information Systems may pursue professional certification, which is offered by product vendors, training institutions and computer associations. Students can continue their education through a Master of Science in Information Systems program. In-depth education in business and computing is provided by master’s degrees, which qualifies students for management positions.
