Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Resort Management

Resort management majors can obtain a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Hospitality Management concentrating in resort management, a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) specializing in resort management, or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Resort Management. Prerequisites for majors in resort management include coursework in human resources administration, finance, operations management, and marketing.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Resort Management

Some schools offer Resort Management degree programs wherein they also offer training in spa, casino, restaurant, hotel, ski resort, or event management. Students enrolled in Resort Management programs are taught behind-the-scene skills in personnel administration and grounds maintenance, apart from developing communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Some colleges and universities allow resort management majors to specialize in numerous entertainment or event operations and facilities.

Education Requirements

A university admissions process may have to be undergone by students seeking to earn bachelor’s degrees in Resort Management, in addition to applying to the degree-granting college, which is usually the hospitality or business school. They may need to attend an interview and submit a personal essay and letters of recommendation, in addition to achieving a GPA of 2.0 to 2.5.

Coursework

Having professional work experience and knowing a second language may also be required of resort management majors. Coursework may include specific topic areas such as:

Job and Wage Outlook

Employment in the industry of hotel, specifically of lodging managers, is expected to rise 8% in the 2010-2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS)). Per the same agency, the best opportunities are projected for those with college degrees in hotel management or hospitality. The annual average salary of $46,810 was reported for these managers in 2012 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Those who graduate from undergraduate Resort Management programs may want to look into a related master’s degree. Related degrees include a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) with a concentration in hospitality or Hospitality Management Master of Science (M.S.).
