Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Software Engineering Technology

Schools typically offer bachelor’s degree programs in software engineering technology as a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and not as a Bachelor of Software Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T.).

Admission criteria require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

The primary focus of these programs is on advanced data structures, operating systems, programming languages, and math. Students enjoy a wide array of options among various application areas, including digital system design, artificial intelligence, embedded systems, and computer networks.

Internships are available at many schools, whereby students have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in real-world environments. ABET, an accrediting agency, may accredit these educational programs in engineering.

Coursework

The primary focus of coursework is on computer science and math, in addition to data structure and algorithm analysis. Students must complete a senior project. They also examine topic areas such as:

•Design patterns
•Software security
•Operating systems concepts
•Project management
•Database management
•Software architecture and design

Career Choices

Those that complete a bachelor’s degree program in software technology can seek employment opportunities in telecommunications, governmental agencies, healthcare, and businesses. Job responsibilities may include troubleshooting of network and Internet systems, providing security to networks, and updating computer systems. Graduates may seek job titles such as the following:

•Network administrator
•System analyst
•Application developer
•Software engineer
•Software developer

Job and Wage Outlook

A faster-than-average job growth rate of 30% has been predicted for software developers over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). During the same period, application developers and systems developers are expected to see respective growth rates of 28% and 32%, while network and computer systems administrators and systems analysts are expected to enjoy growth rates of 28% and 22% respectively.

In May 2012, systems developers, application developers, network and computer systems administrators, and computer systems analysts brought home average annual wages of $99,000, $90,060, $72,560, and $79,680, respectively.

Continuing Education Choices

Those who complete a bachelor’s degree program may continue their education by earning a master’s degree in software engineering technology; they may choose to enroll in on-campus or online programs. Earning a doctorate in software engineering would benefit those seeking jobs in academia or research.
