Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Systems Engineering

Majors Overview November 17, 2014

Students in bachelor’s degree programs in system engineering will be taught the fundamentals of math and science for the purpose of designing and analyzing complex systems. Those that graduate from these programs will be able to work in information technology, production, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and telecommunications.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Systems Engineering

Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in systems engineering are taught about analyzing client needs in order to design devices, networks, and equipment aimed at ensuring the efficient working of businesses and industries. Research is performed by students, thereby allowing them to devise innovative solutions to problems and ways of improving operations.

Health delivery, transportation, product assembly, building design, and computer networking may be among the systems included in the program. Schools offering the program may allow concentrations in control systems, engineering systems, computer networking systems, or aviation systems. Engineering principles are used by students in assessing a given industry and creating models aimed at improving functionality.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework is devised to augment general education classes with courses in science, computers, and specialized mathematics. Capstone design projects are typically devised to offer hands-on experience to students enrolled in the program. Core coursework may include these topic areas:

•Operations research
•System design
•Dynamic systems
•Engineering management
•Probability
•Design and modeling
•Physics

Career Options

Given that virtually every industry would benefit from system improvement, career options are available to graduates of the program with a wide range of employers, such as government, manufacturing, information technology, and biomedicine. Systems cost planning, testing, training, and research may be involved in systems engineering careers. Interested individuals may choose from job titles such as:

•Network analyst
•Project chief
•Mission director
•Integration manager
•System architect

Continuing Education Options

Enrollment in certificate programs in power systems engineering, systems architecture, and systems engineering management will enable graduates to focus on various systems engineering specializations. Coursework in some graduate certificate programs in systems engineering is devised to allow application toward advanced degrees.
Students may choose to earn master’s degrees in systems engineering in order to expand their career prospects. Advanced theories in research methods, risk analysis, and system modeling and analysis may be explored in master’s degree programs.
