Majors Overview September 5, 2014

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Web Design and Multimedia

Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in web design and multimedia are introduced to principles in online marketing, industry design, desktop publishing, and digital technology. Students gain a firm grasp of the rudiments of Web design through introduction to Adobe creative applications, such as InDesign, Photoshop, or Flash. Various programming languages, such as JavaScript, XML, CSS, and HTML, are taught to students, so they know how to create compelling websites and products.

Over the duration of the program, students engage in the creation of projects customized in accordance with the needs of potential clients; they also obtain a grasp of the business aspects related to multimedia and Web design. Students also engage in exploring the reactions of users to specific multimedia aimed at creating functional and accessible products.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.

Coursework

Coursework primarily focuses on digital programs, though it may also cover liberal arts classes aimed at improving students’ communications skills. Apart from courses, a senior capstone project may also be included in some programs for students to complete before they can graduate. Core coursework commonly includes topic areas such as:

•Typography
•Web design
•Ecommerce
•Animation
•Image manipulation

Career Choices

Those that graduate from the program can seek occupations in multimedia projects where they can play specialist roles; their job duties may require them to script and create attractive websites or develop interactive programs. Apart from the creation of online products, they may seek occupations in the video game, television, and film industries. They may choose from career options such as:

•Interactive media specialists
•Multimedia artists
•Web media designers

Job and Wage Outlook

A 22% job growth rate has been predicted for web developers and related computer development occupations, while a growth rate of 8% is expected to be witnessed by multimedia artists and animators over the 2010 – 2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, web developers and multimedia artists took home respective average annual wage packets of $62,500 and $61,370 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates that want to develop their technical skills may look into master’s degree programs in media, technology, or entertainment. There are also graduate programs available in graphic design. These programs provide coursework on coding, data delivery, graphic design, and interactive media. Students learn how to improve their visual communication by taking courses in media production and computer animation.
