Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science Degree in Library Science

Majors Overview October 24, 2014

Those interested in understanding the operation of modern libraries, along with learning how to manage and organize media, should look into bachelor’s degree programs in library science. Many areas of interest are provided in this field, and pathways to graduate degrees in library science are provided by bachelor’s degrees.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Library Science

A Bachelor of Library Science is offered by some schools. Often, students that complete a library science program receive a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Library Science, or they may opt for a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, information science, or education, among other fields, with an emphasis or certificate choice in library studies.

Admission to the university or college that offers the library science program would meet the needs of a student interested in the field. Library administration courses are taught within the open field of library science, whereby students are allowed to focus on areas of individual interest.

For instance, students that seek teaching careers at the school library can enroll in a bachelor’s degree program in education with a certificate or emphasis in library science. Students are trained to seek employment as librarians in special research, museum, military, corporate, or public school libraries.

Coursework

It takes four years for students to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in library science, wherein they are taught about modern library methods and tools used to collect and maintain informational media relevant to the specialties of their library. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Information media types and uses
•Resource management tools and strategies
•Classification and cataloging systems
•Media selection and purchasing
•Database types and functions
•Basic computer programs
•Literature research
•Library administration procedures

Career Choices

Those that successfully complete a bachelor’s degree in library science can seek library support positions that some libraries may allow the students to fill while still enrolled in the program. For instance, no education requirements are mandated for those seeking library page jobs, as these workers are only accountable for the return and organization of media on shelves demarcated for the purpose. Some popular career options are:

•Library technician
•Associate librarian
•Library assistant
•Library clerk

Continuing Education Choices

Students enrolled in schools offering bachelor’s degree programs in library science may pursue continuing education by enrolling in a master’s degree program offered at the same institution. Some schools that offer a library science bachelor’s program may enter into articulation agreements with another school to facilitate the completion of the Master of Library Science (M.L.S.) or a doctorate degree program.

Students may seek expansion of their knowledge base in related areas via programs in educational media or management. Employers for managing positions prefer candidates that hold a master’s degree or higher, though this requirement may be waived by some libraries under certain circumstances (The American Library Association).
