Students enrolled in these programs are typically required to delve into areas such as software maintenance, software development, project management, software security, quality assurance, and software design.

In addition to security, these programs include several areas of specialization, including entrepreneurship, business applications, computer engineering, artificial intelligence, e-business systems, and bioinformatics. During the same decade, systems developers and applications developers are expected to see respective job growth rates of 32% and 28%, while computer programmers and systems analysts are expected to enjoy growth rates of 12% and 22%, respectively.

In May 2012, systems developers brought home an average annual wage of $104,480, while applications developers banked $90,060; programmers and systems analysts grossed $74,280 and $79,680, respectively, during the same period (BLS).

Continuing Education Options

Those that successfully complete a bachelor’s degree program may seek continued education by earning Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Software Engineering that would help these individuals stay updated about technological advancements in the field, gain career advancement, or move into research careers.
