Degree Overview: Bachelor of Science in Technology Management (B.S.T.M.) Degree in Networking or Security Technology

Majors Overview September 2, 2014

Those that have an interest in databases and computers may want to look into bachelor’s degree programs in technology management concentrating on networks and security. These programs will teach students to analyze particular issues concerning compromised network securities and manage large amounts of data.

Bachelor of Science in Technology Management (B.S.T.M.) Degree Programs in Networking or Security Technology

An increasing reliance on online transactions and data management by businesses implies a growing dependence on computers. An increase in network usage has made protection of sensitive information from hackers and viruses a necessity. Through a bachelor’s degree program in tech management, students will be provided electives or specialties in security and networks.

A broader technology management program may be offered by some schools with coursework in business, liberal arts, and IT.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

While coursework may vary by program, core coursework may generally include a set of computer classes like security foundations, project management, and technology management. Electives on various topic areas such as database design or programming languages may be chosen by students. Coursework may usually include:

•Networking
•Systems analysis
•Databases
•UNIX
•Database systems

Career Choices

Those that graduate from the program can seek occupations in IT from organizations and firms. During the course of their work duties, they may be required to motivate a team for IT projects, keep up-to-date with advances in technology, design programs for databases or networks, upgrade new programs, and streamline processes to ensure that work gets done more efficiently.

They may also have to perform customer service tasks in which they analyze the reactions of users to specific computer systems. They may choose from career options such as the following:

•Computer support specialist
•IT director
•Computer systems analyst

Job and Wage Outlook

A 17% job growth rate has been predicted for computer support specialists, while a 25% growth rate is expected to be witnessed by computer systems analysts over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, computer support specialists took home an average annual wage of $47,660, while computer systems analysts banked $79,680 that year (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of the bachelor’s degree program may pursue continued education by earning a master’s degree or simply undergoing advanced technical training. Schools offer a doctoral or master’s degree in information assurance, IT, or technology management. Coursework in these programs involves examination of databases, security, ecommerce, and networks. It involves delving into ethical or legal issues as well. Completion of extensive thesis or research projects may be required of students enrolled in some programs.
