Bachelor’s Degree Program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
Students enrolled in 4-year bachelor’s degree programs in naval architecture and marine engineering are imparted various engineering skills, such as engineering equipment management, communications, professionalism, troubleshooting, and mechanical design. Apart from becoming adept at designing and operating boats, students may also be trained to work with other types of marine transportation, such as aircraft carriers, submarines and sailboats. Schools may also offer internships, thereby allowing students to work alongside professional engineers in marine or maritime environments, such as the U.S. Coast Guard.
Education Requirements
Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma. There may be additional requirements to meet in naval academies such as nominations from a government authority, a medical exam and fitness assessment. There may also be age restrictions for candidates seeking admission in naval academies.
Coursework
A practical experience component is available in programs; accordingly, students may have to work on projects, shadow a marine engineer in the field, or work under an engineer’s supervision. Students may gain practical experience through computer simulations. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:
•Steam power
•Diesel power
•Marine cooling systems
•Welding
•Engineering design
•Marine maintenance
•Electrical power
Job and Wage Outlook
Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, job growth rates of 10% have been predicted for marine engineers and naval architects (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2012, these professionals brought home an average annual wage of $88,100 (BLS).
Continuing Education Choices
Graduates from the bachelor’s degree program can seek continued education by earning a master’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering to increase their technical ability. Some may even opt for a doctorate in the field to pursue careers in research and academia. Licensure is mandatory in all states for engineers who offer services directly to the public.
