Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Video Editing

Students enrolled in a graduate degree and post-graduate certificate programs in film editing gain the specific skills and advanced tools they would need in editing video. Those enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Video Production program often complete coursework that is more interdisciplinary and imparts a strong grasp of technical editing and video production skills, in addition to giving students a solid foundation of the film industry and general education coursework.

Typically, admission criteria do not stress the need for any related experience; however, similar courses may be requirements before students enrolled in some programs are allowed to major in the field.

The bachelor’s degree program in video production teaches students about operating and maintaining the equipment used in video and digital editing. They also learn the basics of audio production, post-production, script analysis, visual storytelling, and communication theory.

Studio laboratory experiences are available in several undergraduate degree programs in video production, wherein students gain first-hand instruction on using editing techniques to tell a story via visual media.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. Before they can be awarded a video production bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution, students may have to complete university courses in mathematics, computer science, art, media studies, and communication studies.

Coursework

Both practical and theoretical courses are available within the curriculum of a bachelor’s degree program related to video production and editing. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Video production
•Postproduction
•Video scripting
•Non-linear editing
•Digital video editing
•Digital media
•Communication theory
•Audio production
•Video filmmaking

Job and Wage Outlook

In 2010, about 49,500 individuals were employed as film and video editors in the U.S. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Most of these professionals were employed in the video and motion picture industries, while others held jobs in manufacturing, cable programming, and radio and television broadcasting.

Most video and film editors worked in the states of California and New York. In 2012, film and video editors brought in an average annual wage of $46,280. Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, job growth rate of three percent have been predicted for film and video editors (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Some individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree program may seek continuing education by enrolling in Master of Science (M.S.) in Film Production and Editing programs or graduate Certificate in Film Editing programs. Universities located in New York and California offer most of these programs, wherein current film professionals may gain advanced editing skills.
