Master of Management (M.M.) Programs in Information Systems Security

While few schools offer a Master of Management (M.M.) program in Information Systems Security, some schools offer a Master of Information Security Policy and Management or Master of Science in Information Security (M.S.I.S.). Alternatively, security may be chosen by students as part of a broader master’s program in information systems management. Specializations within the field of information systems security may be available in such programs, and schools may also offer non-thesis or thesis options. Baccalaureate degrees are required to be held by incoming students to master’s degree programs, preferably in a related field. Students may also be required to submit GRE and/or GMAT scores, apart from meeting other admission requirements.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree. They must also submit transcripts and, in some schools, complete a graduate entrance exam such as the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test). In some schools, applicants may have to submit letters of recommendation, in addition to a resume listing volunteer and work experience.

Coursework

Program graduates address the information security needs of various kinds of businesses and organizations. Students learn about creating cyber-security strategies, implementing these plans, and troubleshooting when problems arise. Coursework can vary by the concentration area chosen whether in management or technology, for instance. Core coursework may cover subject areas such as:

•Information security
•Operating systems
•Network security
•Programming
•Database systems
•Telecommunications

Job and Wage Outlook

Professionals trained to protect the information systems of companies are in demand in several industries. Wages paid to these professionals may vary by the type of industry and the size of the company. In March 2014, information security managers from the 10th to 90th percentiles brought in wages ranging between $68,065 and $141,644. Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth rate of 15% has been predicted for computer and information systems managers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The growth is expected to be driven by the need for security, among other factors (BLS).
