Earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Audio Production

Majors Overview May 20, 2014

Graduates of a bachelor’s degree program in audio production will be qualified for entry-level work in audio production and sound recording. These programs include hands-on studio production work with industry equipment.

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree Programs in Audio Production

Students enrolled in four-year degree programs in audio production are imparted a combination of technology-based production skills with communication theories. Some schools offer BS or BA in majors such as recording industry and audio production. Specializations in communication or the music business may be included in some programs. Students are taught about the usage of professional sound recording for live and studio recording, editing, and mixing. They may also be taught about music from a technical or engineering perspective, which could help them seek careers in entertainment, film, or broadcasting.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a high school diploma. They may also have to meet minimum GPA standards and obtain department approval. Some schools limit admission to a restricted number of students every spring and fall.

Coursework

Coursework is usually flexible to some extent, depending on whether the interest of students lies in technology, production, or an alternate aspect of the recording or sound engineering industry. Apart from general education courses, coursework may often include subject areas such as:

•Musicianship
•Studio management
•Recording industry business
•Studio recording
•Audio technology
•Acoustics and audio
•Mixing and mastering

Career Choices

Those who seek careers in sound recording and audio production in various fields, such as broadcasting and music, need to be knowledgeable in a wide array of computer-based software and equipment. Those who graduate from audio production degree programs may seek occupations in the entertainment industry wherein they produce or engineer various media, including radio and television programming, music, and film soundtracks. Others may seek jobs with live entertainment venues, recording studios, and broadcast media outlets. These professionals may seek possible job titles in audio production, such as:

•Recording engineer
•Sound effects editor
•Audio technician
•Broadcast engineer
•Audio editor

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates of the bachelor’s program may pursue continued education by earning advanced degrees in audio production, such as a Master of Science (M.S.) in Audio Technology, Production or Recording Arts, or a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.). Combined master’s and bachelor’s degree programs in the audio field are offered by some schools. Advanced education in digital media, studio equipment, multi-track recording industry, and the music industry are provided by master’s degree programs in audio production. Graduates can seek management careers in entertainment or media and in niche professions such as teaching positions that require advanced education.

Job and Wage Outlook

A job growth rate of 1% has been predicted for sound engineering technicians over the 2010-2020 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). In 2012, these technicians took home an average annual wage of $56,610. The best prospects are expected to be enjoyed by individuals who are ready to enter the smaller markets or those with previous experience.
