Information on eCommerce and eBusiness Programs

Graduate level training in eCommerce is imparted to interested individuals through certificate or master’s degree programs. Certificate programs, which have no more than ten courses, expect incoming students to have prior experience in eCommerce. Students take about two years to complete master’s degree programs, many of which are available in online formats.

Students enrolled in these programs learn various aspects of eCommerce, such as database management, security issues, and Web design. More business courses, including marketing or finance, may be included in master’s programs.

Graduate Certificate Programs in eCommerce

Current eCommerce professionals can enhance their managerial and technological skills through a series of courses within certificate programs. Lengths of programs vary and include four to seven courses. Students are often allowed to apply the credit from such coursework towards master’s degree programs.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree and have prior working experience in the fields of eBusiness or eCommerce. Prerequisite courses in business or computer science or business are requirements in some programs.

Coursework

A subset of topic areas covered within the coursework of a master’s degree program often comprises the courses within a graduate certificate. Core coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Security issues
•Multimedia tools
•Internet marketing
•Web design
•Software engineering

Master of Science (M.S.) Programs in eCommerce

Students take two years to complete master’s degree programs in eBusiness or eCommerce that are available in online formats. Schools expect graduates to have the managerial and technical skills necessary for the effective growth of businesses through employment of effective marketing tools and management of online services. Programs in eCommerce incorporate both general business and technical education.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school apart from submitting satisfactory scores on the GMAT or GRE. Current employment in a related field or completion of prior business coursework would prove helpful.

•Multimedia tools
•Web engineering
•Web services and design
•Computer programming

•Developers
•Systems administrators
•Systems analysts
•Web designers

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, respective job growth rates of 25% and 20% have been predicted for computer systems analysts and web developers (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2012, computer systems analysts brought in an average annual wage of $79,680; web developers earned $62,500 on average that same year (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Professionals in eCommerce or eBusiness may pursue continuing education aimed at advancement of technical skills in areas such as database security or programming languages. Schools offer various certifications in those areas.
