Information on Master’s Degree Programs in Computer Art

Majors Overview July 8, 2015

This article talks about master’s degree programs in computer art and their education requirements, coursework, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master’s Programs in Computer Art

A master’s degree in computer art is available for individuals with a keen interest in employing technology for the creation of images and designs. The focus of Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) programs in Computer Art is on visual design, graphic design, and animation, apart from teaching technical skills and creative expression ideas. These programs are devised to give students hands-on training through the use of industry-standard hardware and advanced creative software. The program involves participation by students in conceptual thinking exercises and the creation of a portfolio of their artistic work. Completion of a thesis project is a requirement in some programs.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree, apart from having previous computer art experience and submitting a portfolio of work done by them. Some schools insist on the completion of prerequisite courses in computer technology, multimedia design, and art before allowing incoming students to take MFA-level classes.

Coursework

Practical training is used to impart a solid foundation to enrolled students in graphic design methods, 3-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques, and interactive technology. Discussion-based courses are also available in subjects such as art appreciation, art history, and fine art theory. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Advanced audio and video technology
•Web design
•Animation Software
•Graphic design
•Visual communication
•Interactive content design
•Broadcasting

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a slower-than-average job growth of six percent has been predicted for multimedia artists and animators (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). These professionals brought in an average annual wage of $61,370 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates may seek continuing education by enrolling in Art Education Ph.D. programs. Coursework covers the theories and skills necessary for teaching others to create art. Graduates also receive education about current technology and advanced artistic methods. Earning state teaching certification will enable graduates to teach any level of student.
