This article talks about Master of Humanities (M.H.) degree programs and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master of Humanities (M.H.) Degree Programs

Topics in literature, the arts, philosophy and history are in humanities programs. The focus of Master of Humanities (M.H.) programs is on teaching students about applying critical thinking and research skills to various situations and issues. Classes in music and creative writing are also available in some programs. Writing and extensive research assignments are often required to be completed by students.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree, and in many cases, the completion of a substantial number of undergraduate courses in the liberal arts is also expected. Those keen on emphasizing art, music, or languages may have to meet additional admissions qualifications. Students may be admitted by admission boards conditionally in accordance with their individual qualifications.

Coursework

Students usually complete MH programs in 1-3 years. In many programs, students are allowed to select an area of specialization. Completion and defense of a capstone project or thesis in the form of a research project, thesis paper, or oral presentation is typically an expectation. Core coursework may commonly include topic areas such as:

•Music
•Media studies
•Art history
•Postmodern fiction
•Research methods
•Classics
•Women’s studies
•Multicultural perspectives
•Human rights

Career Choices

Program graduates may seek careers in diverse fields. They can use the writing, research, and critical reasoning skills learned to pursue several positions, commonly in entertainment, academia, or business, in fields such as:

•Teaching
•Publishing
•Journalism

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2010 – 2020 decade, reporters and correspondents, and elementary school teachers are expected to see respective job growth rates of -8% and 17%. Over the same decade, editors, and writers and authors can expect a 1% and 6% job growth rate, respectively. In May 2012, these professionals brought in respective average annual wages of $35,870, $53,400, $53,880, and $55,940 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates may seek continuing education via further graduate study in the field or related discipline such as anthropology, American studies, cinema, business, English, creative writing, or history. Those keen on a career in public school teaching will have to complete an approved teacher certification program and pass the required pedagogy and content examinations.
