Information on Master’s Degree Programs in Internet Technology

Majors Overview July 15, 2015

This article talks about master’s degree programs in Internet technology and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Master’s Programs in Internet Technology

Coursework in master’s degree programs in Internet technology is a combination of business management concepts with computer programming practices aimed at training students for eCommerce and website development careers. Students get concentrated instruction on the most up-to-date features of programs such as Java, ML/CSS, ColdFusion, .Net, and Webcasting. Information systems design and network architecture may also be in the program. An internship or a final project may be a requirement in some programs. Many programs cater to working students, and most part-time students can complete these programs within two years.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school, in addition to submitting a resume, optional letters of recommendation, and an introductory course in Java.

Coursework

Coursework involves study time of approximately 30 semester hours. A number of credit hours are mandated to complete an internship and a project management course. Core coursework may cover topic areas such as:

•Information systems design
•Internet programming and analysis
•Computer systems and Internet technology fundamentals
•Programming with Java
•Network architecture

Career Choices

Program graduates may seek careers in:

•Computer systems administration
•Network architecture
•Computer security administration
•Database Administration

While promotional positions can be gained by holding an advanced degree, relevant certification and experience are also important (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). Additionally, some employers require prospective network architect and database administrator professionals to hold a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), in addition to possessing a background in information systems or Internet technology.

Wage Outlook

Internet technology administrators can seek computer systems design occupations, company management positions, and telecommunications jobs. In 2012, computer systems analysts brought in an average annual wage of $79,680 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates can seek continuing education by earning a doctoral degree. They may also seek continuing education choices in information and Internet technology. They can also opt to attend certificate programs and individual classes in topic areas such as systems administration, network security, and Web design, most of which are available through a university or college. However, educational programs are also offered by some major companies in the computer industry, like Sun, Oracle, and Microsoft.
