Get information about master’s degree programs in criminal justice with executive management options and their educational requirements, coursework, career choices, job and wage outlook, and continuing education choices.

Information on Executive Management Program

Criminal justice professionals who seek administrative positions could benefit from enrolling in a Master of Science (M.S.) in Criminal Justice program. They may also be allowed to opt for one of the several management concentration choices, including corrections management, security, or emergency management.

Schools may customize executive management programs specifically for working professionals in the field, and offer flexible scheduling, including online and evening classes. A capstone project or comprehensive examination typically marks the culmination of the program; students are allowed to demonstrate that they understand complex issues within law enforcement and that they can lead personnel in the path of justice.

Educational Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree. They also typically need to devote substantial course hours to criminal justice classes, apart from meeting standard GPA requirements and submitting satisfactory GRE exam scores. As these programs focus on already working professionals in the field, the requirements for admission typically include a minimum amount of work experience.

Coursework

Over the span of the program, students engage in planning and conducting research on organizational administration, among other aspects of criminal justice. Core coursework may cover subject areas such as:

•Law enforcement management
•Law and social control
•Juvenile justice
•Policy analysis
•Organizational theory
•Intelligence analysis
•Criminal justice administration
•Risk management

Career Choices

After they complete the degree program, graduates can seek advanced positions in the field. They may pursue popular job titles such as:

•Police supervisor
•Juvenile advocate
•Criminal justice administrator
•Criminal justice research analyst

Job and Wage Outlook

Over the 2012 – 2022 decade, a job growth of 5% has been predicted for police and detective supervisors (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In May 2014, these professionals brought in an average annual wage of $84,260 (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates may continue their education by pursuing doctorate programs where there is a heavy emphasis on research into tools and methods in the field. Students mark the culmination of the doctorate program when they construct, present and defend a dissertation from original research they have conducted.
