Master of Management (MM) Degree Program in Public Administration

Majors Overview November 16, 2015

This article talks about Master of Management (M.M.) degree programs in Public Administration and their education requirements, coursework, career choices, and wage outlook.

Master of Management (M.M.) Degree Programs in Public Administration

No school offers a Master of Management (M.M.) degree program in Public Administration; those keen on studying the subject in a graduate-level program can pursue a Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) degree. Courses or even whole specializations in non-profit management are available through several such programs.

Enrollees in an MPA program learn about developing and managing regulations, policies, and rules for a government agency, company, or non-profit organization. Graduates can expect to build their knowledge of public policy and political situations, in addition to enhancing their management and administrative skills. Apart from non-profit management, the program also offers other specialized areas of concentration such as environmental, urban, or emergency administration.

Program graduates can further their education by earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Administration that could build their analytical and research skills and train them for roles in consulting, academia, research and management.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria in this highly competitive program typically require incoming students to meet stringent requirements. Applicants are required to hold a bachelor’s degree, meet an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0, submit Graduate Record Exam scores, and letters of recommendation and complete a personal essay.

Coursework

Program coursework covers management and leadership topic areas such as team building exercises, organizational strategies, organizational initiatives, conflict management, and management tactics. Core coursework may cover subject areas such as:

•Professional ethics
•Public Policy
•Organization and management
•Human resource management
•Financial management
•Financial accounting
•Administrative law
•Strategic management
•Non-profit management
•Organizational change

Career Choices

Program graduates can expect to develop the leadership and organizational skills necessary for working in government agencies, corporations, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, entertainment businesses, and healthcare facilities. Enrollees in a master’s program are usually those currently working in the public administration field and seeking to enhance their skills. After they graduate, they may seek career advancement as policy analysts or public officials. Students may seek possible career positions such as:

•Environmental regulation officer
•International business manager
•Government official
•Hospital board member

Wage Outlook

Salary can vary by position. For instance, in May 2012, legislators at the federal, tribal, local and state levels brought in an average annual wage of $19,780 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In January 2014, policy analysts earned a median wage of $52,575 per annum while members of boards of directors had an annual wage in the $13,086 to $383,641 range.
