Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Degree Program in Case Management Overview

Majors Overview November 17, 2015

Case management’s organizational structure is the focus of Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree programs with a specialization in case management. This program will prepare students for careers at various nursing facilities, such as outpatient centers and hospitals, and in home health care.

Information on Master of Science in Nursing Degree Program in Case Management

Aspiring registered nurses (RNs) have to prepare for licensure by completing a diploma program, associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree program in nursing. With a master’s degree, registered nurses can gain the advanced education they would need to become nurse specialists. RNs aspiring to specialize in case management can pursue a graduate nursing program with a focus in the same subject area.

Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) Programs with a Case Management Specialization

The study of clinical resource management is often the focus for case management students who consequently gain decision-making and critical thinking skills. They might also learn about effective balancing of patient satisfaction with efficiency, care, and cost management. Program graduates might seek employment as advocates for patients, apart from ensuring the assessment, planning and implementation of patients’ care.

Post-professional or entry-level track may be available through some programs. Experienced nurses would benefit from the post-professional track. Full-time students can typically complete the program within 2.5 years.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Prerequisite courses could include nutrition, anatomy, and developmental psychology.

Coursework

Program coursework is devised to impart foundational knowledge of the healthcare system, in addition to the life care planning process through courses with a focus on clinical management, client education, and nursing administration. Core coursework that augments classes such as current issues in the health care system, nursing theory, and financial management, covers numerous topic areas including:

•Clinical nursing concepts
•Care management
•Administration of nursing systems
•Health policy analysis
•Leadership and management in healthcare systems
•Healthcare management’s law and ethics
•Human behavior
•Nursing research

Career Choices

Program graduates can seek management positions in healthcare facilities. Nurses currently working in administrative positions with casework can choose from possible job positions in:

•Rehabilitation facilities
•Nursing care facilities
•Hospitals

Certification and Continuing Education Choices

Program graduates can earn certification in nursing case management offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) after meeting the ANCC’s continuing education requirement by completing the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.). They would also need to meet minimum work experience requirements. Certification through the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) may also be earned by these professionals. A Ph.D. program in Nursing or a doctoral program in nursing practice (DNP) would meet the needs of those seeking continuing education in the field.
