Students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs in computer networking and security, often referred to as computer and network security, are trained in managing and securing linked systems of devices and computers.
Students can be specifically trained in evaluating the security requirements of an organization’s infrastructure and creating plans for protection against security breaches and potential attacks, in addition to ensuring compliance with implemented security policies.
While the primary focus is on system and network security, students are also taught about ways of improving application and database security. Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma.
Coursework
Coursework may include ways of defending against computer, application, and network attacks and the numerous methods used by attackers. They may also be taught about the fundamentals of criminal justice principles and examination of their modes of application to information security. Coursework may include topic areas such as the following:

Graduates can choose from numerous career opportunities in the areas of security management and computer networking. Job and Wage Outlook
A job growth rate of 12% has been predicted for network and computer systems administrators over the 2012 – 2022 decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)). Information security analysts are expected to witness a 37% growth over the same period. In May 2012, information security analysts and network administrators took home average annual wages of $86,170 and $72,560, respectively.
Certification and Continuing Education Choices
Graduates of the bachelor’s degree program may opt for continuing education by earning a master’s degree related to information security, and thereafter, they can seek careers in network security, computer security, or compliance. Schools also offer some information technology doctoral programs with a concentration in information security; students that complete these programs may pursue careers in academia or research at a university.
Graduates may also seek professional certification as offered by numerous professional organizations or product vendors, whereby these professionals could showcase their skills and knowledge in the field to potential employers.
