Overview of Information Systems Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree Program

Majors Overview April 4, 2014

Professionals in the Information Systems field use their business experience and technical expertise to support organizations and businesses becoming productive. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs in Information Systems will teach students how to problem solve, assist information systems, and promote communications.

B.S. Programs in Information Systems

Students enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Information Systems degree programs are imparted instructions on computer-based systems and taught to understand managerial principles; this is aimed at aiding companies in organization and management of data. The focus of program coursework is on contemporary tools and theories in commerce and technology, and begins by over-viewing both general business topics and current technological resources, such as marketing, finance and accounting.

Students build on their basic groundwork and go on to explore the means of creating and maintaining useful systems of data; the curriculum underscores subject areas such as e-commerce, system administration, and information security. The program is devised to help boost communication skills, increase problem-solving awareness, and effectively analyze data, aimed at determining the best modes of construction and maintenance of systems, to maximize efficiency.

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.

Coursework

The program encourages the pursuit of internships and employment of computer equipment and lab experiences by students to apply the skills and knowledge acquired into real-world settings. Apart from an introduction to information systems, coursework may include topic areas such as:

•Network design
•Management information systems
•Structured systems analysis
•Database design
•Project management

Career Choices

Those who successfully complete the program may pursue information systems management, systems development, and system administration positions within large corporations, educational facilities and government agencies. They can choose from job titles such as:

•Operations manager
•Systems analyst
•Database administrator
•Systems designer

Job and Wage Outlook

A 15% employment growth rate has been predicted for database administrators over the 2012-2022 decade, while the corresponding growth rate of 25% has been projected for systems analysts (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). In December 2013, database administrators took home an average annual wage of $77,080 while systems analysts earned $79,680, and operations managers earned $60,168.

Continuing Education Choices

Graduates from a bachelor’s degree program can seek continued education by earning a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science or a Master of Science degree (M.S.) in Information Systems. There is a heavy focus on research in the coursework of these programs, aimed at preparing students for college-level teaching positions or advanced positions in the industry.
