Majors Overview May 3, 2015

Established business professionals interested in improving their career opportunities should look into executive Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) programs.

Executive M.B.A. Programs

Students enrolled in an executive M.B.A. program may complete it in less than two years through weekend and night classes. The focus of most programs is on honing the skills and knowledge of high-level business leaders with about a decade of work experience in their field. Students can apply their learned skills to their careers.

Education Requirements

Students who seek admittance to many programs need a certain number of years as a business professional. They are also required to hold a bachelor’s degree already apart from submitting a work history statement, a resume, transcripts, and recommendation letters. Applicants to some schools may also have to attend interviews with faculty and admissions representatives.

Coursework

Coursework may often center on the managerial aspects of various subject areas in the business field, such as legal issues for managers, global capital markets, global capital markets, managerial finance, information technology management, operations management, and managerial economics.

These courses are devised to teach students about ways of applying their business skills and knowledge in the performance of an executive role. Coursework is mainly focused on management in contrast with typical M.B.A. courses, wherein management courses are available as a specialization option.

Program Structure

It typically takes students 19–24 months to complete an executive M.B.A. program, which includes classroom lectures and possible travel on weekends to attend business seminars. A global experience abroad may also be completed by students to gain experience in international business practice. Students conduct case studies and applied research during the latter part of the program, aimed at producing a final capstone thesis before they graduate.
