Assistant Branch Manager Job Description
Job Descriptions November 11, 2013Assistant branch managers have the same general duties as branch managers. In their role, they support the manager and act in the manager’s stead when he or she is not at the branch. This means that the assistant branch manager could spend quite a bit of time accepting and rejecting loan applications, communicating with clients, allowing customers to access their safety deposit boxes, and even working the teller windows if staffing is short, or the branch experiences an unexpected increase in business. The assistant branch manager may also be required to examine accounts, identify discrepancies, and deal with outside lending organizations.
Assistant branch managers are as responsible as managers for the atmosphere of the branch. Just as a manager will look for ways to improve clients and employees experience, the assistant should look for ways to boost profits and productivity. Specifically, assistant branch managers look for ways to alleviate the stress of a managerial position. Other duties might include overseeing the cleaning and maintenance of the building, providing a preliminary audit of branch procedures and policies to ensure all are being followed, and keeping up to date with changes in state and federal laws that might affect the branch.
Ensuring that clients of the bank, from local businesses to individual account holders, are satisfied with their experience at the bank may fall to the assistant manager. This includes interacting directly with clients when they call with concerns or issues and reviewing accounts to make sure all credits and debits are accounted for.
Assistant branch manager positions require only a high school diploma, though most prefer these assistant managers to have a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Some universities have programs specifically designed to prepare students for a manager and assistant manager positions. Even an assistant manager needs to have previous leadership experience in order to qualify for the job, and some banks ask that their managers have Certified Financial Planner certification, or other industry acknowledgements. Since assistant branch managers spend most of their time in administrative tasks, overseeing the branch’s employees and handling customer concerns, customer service skills are just as important as a background in the finance industry.
