Expectation for Online High School Programs

The high school diploma programs offered online generally adhere to the curriculum required by the state where they operate. The education structure for a majority of programs is similar to that of a high school program offered at a traditional school. Classroom coursework includes subject areas such as foreign languages, history, social studies, science and math. Dual credit courses or advanced placement are also offered by many programs. However, a majority of online high school programs exempt some classes such as debate or speech classes and physical education classes that require the personal presence of students. While students are required in some programs to document physical education by submitting signed forms, such requirements are waived by others.

Students use email, instant messaging, voice and video conferencing, and online discussion forums to turn in assignments and communicate with instructors. Other educational services are made available to online students by a majority of programs, such as tutoring, counseling and extracurricular programs. Diplomas are mailed to students who have completed all graduation requirements.
