Degree Overview: Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Cosmetology Management

A.A.S. Programs in Cosmetology Management
Students enrolled in an associate’s degree program in cosmetology management are trained to supervise and own cosmetology businesses. Students are taught a variety of subjects, including skin, nails and hair, in addition to learning to deal with employees and customers, building a client base and managing inventory. It takes two years to complete the majority of programs though, in some programs, students are allowed to receive credit for licensure or work experience. Beauty schools, community colleges and technical schools commonly offer associate’s degree programs. Admission criteria typically require applicants to hold a GED certificate or high school diploma.
Coursework
General education requirements are augmented in the coursework by classes in business practices and cosmetology training. Business courses are also taken by students who are expected to formulate a business plan. Courses usually include subject areas such as:

Licensure Info
Students who graduate from several associate’s degree programs are qualified to take the licensing exam conducted in their state. All personal appearance workers and cosmetologists, other than shampooers, are required obtain licensure in order to be able to practice their profession. Licensure norms include passage of an exam and graduation from a cosmetology program that carries state approval. Periodic renewal of licensure is also expected of licensed cosmetologists.
