Bachelor of Interior Design Degree Program

Bachelor’s degree program in interior design are devised to teach enrolled students modes of creating functional and aesthetic indoor spaces. They learn basic computer applications, eco-design, human behavior, and design and art concepts.

Coursework combines classroom lectures and hands-on training through design projects or internships. The program is often available through the university’s architecture department. Students may have to submit to reviews of personal work portfolios before being allowed to progress through the program. Varying with the institution, students who complete the program are awarded a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Interior Design.

Education Requirements

Admission criteria typically require incoming students to hold a GED certificate or a high school diploma. While submission of portfolios may not be compulsory for gaining admittance to the program, students may have to submit to a portfolio review at the culmination of the first year before being allowed to continue in the program.

Through undergraduate interior design classes, students become adept at developing new ideas and using computer-aided design software. Participants learn about spatial arrangement and the various ways in which design is affected by physical, emotional, and social influences.

They engage in the analysis of indoor air quality, temperature, sound, and lighting apart from choosing materials, flooring, wall treatments, fixtures, and furniture. Coursework is also devised to impart an understanding of the norms, codes, and laws for interior design.

Students enrolled in some schools are allowed to select concentrations in specific kinds of design, such as historical preservation or sustainable design. Schools usually include design projects and internships within the coursework. After they complete the program, students should have completed a portfolio for use in obtaining entry-level jobs. They may choose from typical interior design courses such as:

•Drafting for interior design
•Interior design history
•Interior design theories
•Computer-aided design (CAD)
•Design problems

During that year, the highest wages were paid to these professionals in the states of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Virginia and the District of Columbia (BLS).

Continuing Education Choices

Interior designers are required to obtain licensure in some states. The licensing exam is available through the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. To be eligible for the exam, prospective candidates should have at least six years of professional experience and post-secondary education. The exam only covers public safety issues.
