Schools Offering Communications Programs
Those interested in careers in journalism, interpersonal communication, corporate communication, and management should look into graduate programs in communication studies or communication. These programs are interdisciplinary programs that impart a strong foundation in those careers. The University of Miami in Florida and the University of Washington (UW) – Seattle are two top-ranked schools that offer graduate programs in communication.
University of Washington – Seattle Campus
The U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Washington (UW) 14th on its 2014 list of top public schools in the United States. The school offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) in Communication through its Department of Communications. Courses from seven integrated areas of study can be completed by students enrolled in both degree programs. These areas include global communication, communication and culture, communication technology and society, media organization, social interaction, rhetoric and cultural studies, and political communication.
A Master of Communication (M.C.) is also offered at the school, specifically aimed at mid-career professionals employed in areas of communication such as mediation or public relations journalism. Seven concentrations are available to students enrolled in the program; these include business and economics, politics, law, environmental science, arts, health and medicine, and urban affairs.
University of Miami in Florida
The U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Miami in Florida 48th on its 2014 list of top public schools in the United States. An MA in Communication Studies is offered at the school, aimed at providing an in-depth study of the human communication process. The social effects of executive communication, mass communication, and interpersonal communication are in the program coursework.
The school offers a Ph.D. in Communication targeted at those who aspire for careers at the college level or in research. Specialization areas such as health communication, film, intercultural communication, media, and journalism are available to students.
